Fascinating Book Club at Glo's
Last night, Gloria hosted Book Club and the hostess for our book club picks the book we will all read and discuss. Gloria picked, Hear Me Now: Tragedy in Cambodia by Sophal Leng Stagg...and we were graced by the presence of the author herself.
Sophie, as she asked us to call her, lived her younger years under the regime of the Khmer Rouge in Cambodia. The book was interesting reading and horrible in the atrocities committed by the communists who took control of Cambodia. Hearing of her experience in person brought the book to life. She lived through a horrible time and her love for the freedom in this country and for this country certainly made me more appreciative of the gifts we do have here in the US.
In addition to the book club members, Gloria had invited other friends to experience both the book and the author. There were about 30 of us in attendance. Sophie has established a fund for a group of women in Cambodia to grow silworms, spin the silk and sew bags, shawls and scarves. We all bought something beautiful...I now own a lovely light brown on darker brown shawl. Jo picked up a shawl, a copy of the book autographed and a darling silk purse.
Gloria outdid herself with the food assisted by her friend, Marcia (whose plum torte was beyond wonderful). Glo had a salad, a homemade soup/stew/, amazing finger foods and Sophie brought a Cambodian appetizer that was tangy yet sweet.
If you get a chance to hear Sophie speak, don't miss it. And the procedes from her book and the beautiful items all go to the foundation established to aid the people of Cambodia to live better lives.
Hope everyone has a great weekend.
